What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a form, such as a speech, poster, letter, story, or slideshow, that fits their purpose and audience. They combine words, visuals, and spoken parts when those choices make the message clearer.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a fitting format for a clear reason and a named audience. They combine speech, writing, images, or digital elements so each part supports the message. They can explain their choices.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a flashy tool without considering whether it helps the audience. They may use the same words and details for young children and adults. They may add pictures that do not support the spoken or written message.

How to Assess It

Give this prompt: “Persuade the principal to add a school garden.” Students choose two ways to share the message and explain why each fits.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups audience, purpose, and material cards, then have them build a one-minute talk combining a spoken message with a visual.

  2. Ask students to write: “How would you explain playground safety differently to first graders and the principal?”

  3. Play Audience Switch: students draw a new audience card and revise a short announcement by changing words, details, and presentation format.

  4. Have students create a poster and short speech inviting families to a class event, using details that answer likely family questions.
