What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose and combine ways to present information, such as speech, slides, video, narrative, or argument. They match those choices to their goal and audience. They make each part contribute something useful.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students combine spoken words, writing, images, audio, or video so each part serves a clear purpose. They choose formats that fit the audience and goal. They can explain why their choices work better than other options.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add images, video, or audio only for decoration. They may choose a familiar format without considering the audience. They may also repeat the same information in every part instead of using each part for a clear job.

How to Assess It

Give students a school policy topic and two audiences, ninth graders and the school board. Ask them to choose two presentation formats for each audience and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a claim, chart, photo set, and quotation, then have them build a three-minute presentation for a named audience.

  2. Ask students to write which formats they would use to explain school safety to children, parents, and administrators, and why.

  3. Play an audience-match card game where students pair presentation goals with formats, then defend or challenge each match.

  4. Have students redesign a public service announcement for both a social media post and a city council presentation.
