What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose an organizational structure that fits their purpose and audience. They group related ideas, order sections clearly, and use transitions and text elements to connect the writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can plan and draft a text with a clear opening, logically grouped ideas, useful transitions, and a fitting conclusion. Each section supports the main purpose and is easy to follow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think adding transition words automatically makes writing organized. They may place paragraph breaks randomly, repeat ideas, or use a structure that does not fit the purpose.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Arrange six scrambled sentences about protecting local parks into a clear paragraph. Add one transition and explain why the order works.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paragraph strips from an essay to arrange as an introduction, reasons, evidence, and conclusion, then have them justify the order.
Ask, “Which structure would best explain how recess could be improved, and why?” then have students write a three-sentence plan.
Play Structure Sort with passages labeled sequence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, problem and solution, or description.
Have students create a one-page guide for new students using headings, logical sections, transitions, and a closing tip.
