What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how ideas and events are ordered in a text. They use a clear order, such as beginning, middle, and end, to share their own ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how a story, set of directions, or short informational text is arranged. They can put ideas in a clear order when speaking, drawing, or writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may retell details in random order or assume the most exciting event comes first. They may also confuse the beginning, middle, and end with the first, second, and third sentences.
How to Assess It
- Give students three mixed-up picture cards from a familiar story. Ask them to order the cards and orally explain what happens at the beginning, middle, and end.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture and sentence cards from a familiar story to sort into beginning, middle, and end.
Ask students to write three sentences answering, “What happened first, next, and last in our read-aloud?”
Play a sequencing relay where teams arrange mixed-up steps for making a sandwich, then read the steps aloud.
Examine a simple recipe and discuss why changing the order of the steps could change the result.
