What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how writers arrange events, claims, details, and evidence. They explain why an order works, then choose and use an effective structure in their own writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify structures such as cause and effect, comparison, problem and solution, chronological order, and flashback. They can explain how the order shapes emphasis, pacing, or clarity, then apply it in their own writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think structure only means introduction, body, and conclusion. They may confuse chronological order with cause and effect or add transitions without making ideas connect.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write six sentences answering, “Should eighth graders have homework every night?” Use claim, reason, evidence, and counterclaim, then explain why that order works.

Play a structure sort with passage cards labeled cause and effect, comparison, problem and solution, chronological, or description.
Analyze how a product review presents features and drawbacks, then reorganize it for a different audience.
