What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan and write several connected paragraphs around one clear focus. They arrange support in a sensible order and explain how details fit the main point. They finish with an ending that gives closure.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student writes an introduction that makes the purpose and focus clear. Body paragraphs follow a sensible order, connect evidence to ideas, and use transitions. The conclusion closes the piece without adding unrelated points.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may open with a broad hook that never identifies the main focus. They may pile details into body paragraphs without grouping or explaining them. Conclusions often repeat the introduction word for word or add a new claim.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: "Plan a four-paragraph response arguing for one school change. Write the introduction, list each body paragraph's focus and support, then draft the conclusion."

Ways to Teach It
Give groups six paragraph cards from a sample essay, then have them arrange the cards and label how each part supports the focus.
Ask students to write: Which body paragraph should come first, and how does that order help the reader?
Play Structure Relay: teams sort topic sentences, evidence, explanations, and conclusions into the strongest sequence, then justify one choice.
Have students write a three-paragraph proposal for one realistic school improvement, using survey results or observations as support.
