What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and draft texts so each section has a clear job. They write an engaging opening, arrange supporting material logically, connect ideas clearly, and end with a memorable conclusion.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can organize ideas in an order that fits the purpose and helps readers follow the message. The opening creates interest, body sections build the focus, and the conclusion provides a meaningful final thought.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat an introduction as background only, without a clear focus. They may stack facts in random order or use transitions that do not show relationships. Conclusions often repeat the introduction instead of leaving readers with a final insight.

How to Assess It

Give students six scrambled sentences from a short essay. Ask them to order the sentences, add two transitions, and draft a fitting introduction and conclusion.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a cut-up essay, then have them sequence the parts and label how each section guides the reader.

  2. Ask students to compare two introductions and write which one better establishes focus, audience, and direction, citing specific wording.

  3. Run a transition match game where students pair paragraphs with linking sentences, then justify each match to a partner.

  4. Have students write a school newsletter article with a clear lead, logically ordered details, useful transitions, and a memorable final line.
