What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize influential writing around a clear viewpoint and a specific audience. They choose where to place evidence, explanations, and examples so the text builds toward a convincing ending.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students open with a clear focus and viewpoint suited to the audience. They arrange support to build influence, address audience concerns, and close with a strong final insight or request.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often name a broad topic instead of stating a clear viewpoint, or they bury the viewpoint under background information. They may order evidence randomly or end by simply repeating the introduction.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Give students six paragraph cards from an argument about later school start times. Have them order the cards and explain how one placement influences a skeptical parent.

Ways to Teach It
Cut apart a short editorial, then have pairs rearrange its paragraphs and annotate how each placement affects the reader.
Write for five minutes: Should seniors have open campus lunch, and which opening would make a skeptical principal keep reading?
Play Evidence Lineup: teams place fact, example, counterclaim, and response cards in the strongest order, then defend one choice.
Draft a one-page letter to the school board proposing a policy change, using local data and ending with a specific request.
