What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write a short informational piece that names the subject right away. They add accurate facts and explain a useful word, then finish with a sentence that wraps up the information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can organize a short informational text with a clear beginning, focused details, and an ending. The facts are accurate, and definitions help the reader understand topic words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin with a random detail rather than name the topic. They often list opinions as facts, use an unrelated definition, or add details that do not belong. Some stop after the last fact without closing the piece.
How to Assess It
- Give students a fact card about penguins. Ask them to write four sentences that name the topic, include two facts or definitions, and end the text clearly.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips about bees to sort into opening, fact, definition, and ending, then glue them into a clear paragraph.
Ask students how each paragraph part helps a reader understand the topic, then have them explain their answer using one example.
Play Paragraph Builder: teams draw topic, fact, definition, and conclusion cards, then arrange matching cards into a complete text.
Have students write a museum label for a classroom object, including its name, two facts, one definition, and a closing sentence.
