What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create a short informational piece with a clear opening, accurate details, and an ending. They keep every sentence focused on one subject and put ideas in a sensible order.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write three to five connected sentences that name the subject, teach two or more facts, and end clearly. Readers can tell what the piece explains and when it is finished.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may begin with an unrelated opinion, list disconnected facts, or repeat the opening as the ending. They may also add made-up details or write “The end” instead of a closing thought.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Write four sentences about frogs: an opening, two true facts, and a final sentence that wraps up your explanation.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips about butterflies and have them arrange an opening, three facts, and a closing before copying the paragraph.
Ask, “How can a writer help a reader learn about an animal?” then write a class response using student facts.
Play Paragraph Sort: teams label mixed sentence cards as opening, fact, or closing, then explain one choice.
Create a short care guide for the class plant, including what it is, two care facts, and a clear final reminder.
