What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write clear explanations built around one focused point. They select accurate information, add supporting details, and finish with an ending that ties the ideas together.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student introduces a focused point, supports it with accurate and relevant information, and explains how each detail connects. The ending wraps up the explanation without adding a new idea.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list facts without connecting them to one clear point. They may include interesting but unrelated details, repeat the introduction at the end, or mistake an opinion for evidence.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Write one paragraph explaining why school clubs are useful, with a focused opening, two relevant facts, and a closing sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips from a mixed paragraph and have them arrange the central point, supporting information, explanations, and closing.
Ask students to explain which detail in a sample paragraph is least useful and defend their choice in two sentences.
Play Paragraph Builder, where teams draw topic, fact, detail, and closing cards to create a clear explanation.
Have students write a short guide explaining a school procedure, such as checking out a library book, for a new student.
