What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plan and write influential texts with a clear position and purposeful direction. They sequence claims, evidence, details, and explanations to guide readers toward a strong ending.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can build an opening that makes the position and direction clear. The student orders evidence for the intended audience and closes with a memorable final claim or action.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat organization as a fixed five-paragraph formula. They may place evidence randomly, open with a vague hook, or end by repeating the introduction without adding impact.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Outline a letter persuading the principal to change one school policy. Write the opening, label where three supporting points belong, and draft the closing.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups sentence cards from a persuasive essay and ask them to arrange the opening, evidence, explanations, counterclaim, and conclusion.

  2. Have students explain which argument should come first in a school policy letter and how that choice affects the principal.

  3. Run an evidence-order challenge where pairs arrange five supporting points for maximum impact, then defend their sequence.

  4. Analyze a public service announcement and map how its opening, evidence order, and final call shape the audience’s response.
