What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how an author changes or combines structures, such as chronology, comparison, cause and effect, or problem and solution. They explain how features like headings, repetition, flashbacks, and sidebars affect meaning. They connect each choice to audience or purpose.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify where an author blends, shifts, or interrupts an expected structure. They use evidence to explain how that choice shapes meaning, guides the audience, or supports the author’s purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may only name a structure, such as cause and effect, without explaining its impact. They may treat headings, flashbacks, repetition, or text boxes as decoration. They may also assume every text follows one structure from beginning to end.
How to Assess It
- Give students an excerpt that interrupts chronological order with a flashback. Ask: “How does the flashback shape meaning or affect the reader? Cite one detail.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paragraph cards from an article, then have them compare their sequence with the author’s order and explain the author’s choice.
Ask students to write: “Why might an author interrupt a timeline, repeat an idea, or place information in a sidebar?”
Play a matching game with excerpt cards and purpose cards, such as build suspense, clarify a claim, emphasize contrast, or guide readers.
Examine a news webpage and discuss how headlines, links, images, and section order influence what readers notice first.
