What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine changes in a text’s order and features, such as headings, sections, or openings. They explain how those choices shape meaning for a certain audience or purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can point to a change in order, sectioning, headings, or opening. They can explain how that change helps a particular audience understand the message or supports the writer’s purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a feature, such as a heading, without explaining its effect. They may assume every text needs the same order or confuse the topic with the organization.

How to Assess It

Give students two versions of a short passage with different openings and headings. Ask: Which version better warns families, and how do its organization and features help?

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed paragraph strips from one article; have them reorder the strips for younger readers and add two helpful headings.

  2. Ask students to explain in six sentences why a writer might reveal a result before describing the events that caused it.

  3. Play Structure Switch: teams draw an audience card and purpose card, then revise a short passage’s order, heading, or opening.

  4. Compare a weather alert with a news article about the same storm, then mark how each organizes details for its readers.
