What Students Need to Do

Students identify how a text arranges events, facts, or ideas. They use a clear structure, such as sequence, description, or comparison, when speaking or writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain whether a short text uses time order, description, or comparison and point to clues. They can arrange their own ideas in a clear order that helps a reader follow the meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think organization only means neat handwriting or correct spacing. They may also place events randomly, rely only on transition words, or confuse the main idea with the text structure.

How to Assess It

Give students four mixed-up sentences about planting a seed. Ask them to number the sentences, then add one transition word that clarifies the order.

   Give pairs six sentence strips from a familiar story; students order them, label beginning, middle, and end, then explain one clue.

   Ask, “How would the meaning change if the last event came first?” and have students write two sentences explaining their answer.

   Play Structure Sort with cards showing sequence, description, and comparison; students place each card under its matching heading.

   Read a simple recipe, then have students explain how numbered steps help a cook complete the task correctly.
