What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify captions, subheadings, charts, indexes, and other features in nonfiction texts. They explain how each feature adds information or helps readers find and organize ideas.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name common text features and locate them on a page. They explain what information each feature adds and how it helps organize the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat captions as labels that add no new information. They may confuse an index with a table of contents or read charts without checking headings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a nonfiction page with a caption, subheading, chart, and index entry. Ask them to explain how two features help readers find or understand information.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a nonfiction article to cut apart, then have them rebuild it using its heading, subheadings, captions, chart, and index.
Ask students to write which text feature helped them learn one new fact and explain how it helped.
Play Feature Hunt by calling out a purpose, such as finding a page quickly, while students point to the matching feature.
Compare a library book index with a grocery store aisle sign, then discuss how both help people locate information quickly.
