What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify features such as titles, headings, captions, and diagrams, then determine how the whole text is organized. They explain how these parts work together to present ideas clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify a text feature and the text’s organizational structure. They explain how both guide the reader, connect details, and make the information clear.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a heading or diagram without explaining what it helps readers understand. They may also confuse a text feature with an organizational structure or discuss each one separately.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short problem and solution article with a title, subheadings, and diagram. Ask, “How do one text feature and the structure work together to clarify the main idea?”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a cut-up article with headings, paragraphs, and a diagram, then have them arrange the pieces and explain their choices.
Ask students to write: “How does the diagram support the problem and solution structure of this text?”
Play a matching game where students pair text features with paragraphs and explain how each pairing improves understanding.
Have students examine a recipe or instruction manual and explain how labels, images, and sequence help users complete the task.
