What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine how authors arrange ideas and events to guide readers. They choose and use an organizational pattern that makes their own message clear and effective.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify structures such as chronological order, cause and effect, comparison, and problem and solution. They can explain how the structure shapes meaning and use a fitting structure in their own writing.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may identify a structure from one signal word without considering the whole text. They may also organize ideas in the order they thought of them rather than the order that best supports meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give students six details about a school policy change. Ask them to choose a structure, arrange the details, and explain their choice in two sentences.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups paragraph strips from a short article, then have them arrange the strips and defend the structure they created.
Ask students to explain which structure would best present the causes and effects of a later school start time.
Play a structure sort game using topic cards that students match with chronological, comparison, cause and effect, or problem and solution headings.
Compare how a recipe, news report, and product review organize information for different readers and purposes.
