What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and combine text structures that fit their purpose and audience. They add useful features such as headings, captions, charts, sidebars, and deliberate formatting. They use these choices to make information clear and add style.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students organize ideas with clear structures such as cause and effect, comparison, chronology, or problem and solution. They use headings, captions, charts, and formatting to guide a specific audience without cluttering the text.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat headings, charts, and bold print as decoration rather than tools for readers. They may force one structure onto all information or switch structures without clear transitions.
How to Assess It
- Give students six facts about school lunch waste. Ask them to create a one-page text for families using two structures and two text features, then label each choice.

Ask students to explain how they would organize the same facts for younger students and for the school board.
Play Structure Switch by giving pairs a paragraph to reorganize as chronology, cause and effect, or problem and solution.
Redesign a school announcement for students and families, changing its structure and features to fit each audience.
