What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose and combine structures such as cause and effect, comparison, sequence, and problem and solution to fit their goal and reader. They add headings, captions, charts, sidebars, and formatting when those features improve meaning or style.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can organize an informational piece so the structure fits the message and intended reader. They use features purposefully and explain how each choice guides readers or adds style.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume every informational text needs five paragraphs. They may add headings, bold print, or images as decoration, or combine structures without clear transitions.

How to Assess It

Give students six facts about cafeteria food waste. Ask them to arrange the facts using one clear structure, add two useful text features, and explain each choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups fact cards about hurricanes, then have them arrange the cards into cause and effect, sequence, or problem and solution structures.

  2. Ask students to explain which structure would best teach younger students about online safety and why.

  3. Play Structure Switch by giving pairs one topic and three minutes to outline it using a structure named on a drawn card.

  4. Have students redesign a school club flyer with headings, captions, lists, and images chosen for a specific student audience.
