K.T.SS.1 is a Georgia English Language Arts standard. These are the expectations under it.

  Identify and use text features, including titles, headings, photos, and illustrations, to determine if a text is fiction or nonfiction. (I)

• K.T.SS.1.b

  With adult support, use text features, including titles, illustrations, and/or labels, to add clarity/coherence to texts. (C)

• K.T.SS.1.c

  With adult support, retell events and actions in sequence. (C)

What Students Need to Do

Students notice where a text begins, how ideas or events follow one another, and how it ends. They arrange pictures, words, or sentences so the message is clear.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can point out the beginning, middle, and end of a simple text. They can sequence pictures, drawings, or dictated sentences so another person can follow their meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list details in the order they remember them instead of the order presented. They may also treat the title as the beginning event or leave out the ending.

How to Assess It

Give students three mixed-up pictures from a familiar story. Ask them to order the pictures and explain what happens first, next, and last.

   Give pairs three picture cards from a familiar story and have them arrange, retell, and justify the sequence.

   Ask, “What would be confusing if the ending came first?” and record students’ explanations on chart paper.

   Play a first-next-last relay where teams race to place event cards under the correct sequence labels.

   Examine a handwashing poster, then have students draw the steps in an order that someone could follow.
