What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students remember the main events or actions in a story and place them in order. They use pictures, questions, and sequence words to tell what happened.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can arrange three or four story pictures in the correct order. With a picture cue or question, the student can describe each event using words such as first, next, and last.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may tell their favorite event first instead of following the story order. They may skip the middle event, add events, or confuse retelling with predicting what happens next.
How to Assess It
- After a familiar read-aloud, give each child three event pictures and say, “Put these in order and tell me what happened first, next, and last.”

Ways to Teach It
Mix three picture cards from a familiar story, then have pairs arrange them and point to each card while retelling.
Ask, “What happened first, next, and last?” and have students draw one event and explain where it belongs.
Play a sequencing relay where teams place event cards in order, then say one sentence about each card.
Photograph the steps for washing hands, mix the pictures, and have students order them and explain the routine.
