What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students write a simple sentence that expresses one complete idea. With adult help, they name who or what and tell what happens.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can write a sentence such as “The dog runs” after discussing an idea with an adult. The sentence makes sense by itself and expresses one finished thought.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write only a naming phrase, such as “the dog,” or only an action phrase, such as “is running.” They may think a long group of words is automatically complete.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a child kicking a ball. Say, “Write one sentence that tells who is in the picture and what is happening.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students picture and word cards, then have them build and copy a sentence that names someone or something and tells what happens.
Show a playground picture and ask, “Who do you see, and what is that person doing?” then help students write their answers.
Play Complete or Not by reading short examples while students hold up a green card for complete thoughts and a red card for fragments.
Have students write a classroom message that shares one complete thought, such as “We need more crayons.”
