What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use pictures, spoken words, labels, print, or digital tools to share an idea. With adult help, they choose a form that fits their message and audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student creates a clear message through drawing, labels, dictated words, audio, or a simple digital slide. The student can name who it is for and what it communicates.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think only correctly spelled writing counts as a text. They may add pictures, labels, or recordings that do not match the main message or audience.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to make a message teaching a new classmate how to wash hands, using a picture plus a label, dictated sentence, or recording.

Ways to Teach It
Fold paper into a class book, then have each student draw and dictate one playground safety rule for younger students.
Ask, “How would you tell a friend about our class pet, and how would you tell the principal?”
Give students audience and purpose cards, then let them choose drawing, labels, or audio to create a matching message.
Create a drawing and recorded welcome message for children who will enter kindergarten next year.
