What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how a message reaches them, through words on paper, a screen, sound, or pictures. With teacher prompts, they name the mode and point to a clue.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly labels a sentence card, tablet story, voice recording, and wordless illustration. The student gives a simple clue, such as “I heard it” or “I saw words.”
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call anything on paper print, including a wordless picture. They may also think a tablet communicates in only one way, even when it combines words, sounds, and images.
How to Assess It
- Present a sentence strip, tablet page, voice recording, and wordless picture. Give a four-word mode bank, then ask students to label each example and name one clue.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations with a sentence card, tablet page, voice recording, and wordless picture; children place a matching mode label at each.
Show one message in two forms and ask, “How did each one share the message, and what clue helped you decide?”
Play Mode Match: show or play an example, then students hold up a print, digital, auditory, or visual card.
Take a school walk to find a printed notice, digital display, spoken announcement, and picture sign, then sketch each example.
