What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use books, digital materials, and conversations to learn about a topic or answer a question. With adult help, they connect useful information to its source.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a question, the student explores a book, a teacher-selected digital source, and a conversation with an adult. The student shares relevant facts and names where each fact came from.
Common Misconceptions
- Children may think information comes only from books. They may share an interesting detail that does not answer the question, or forget which source provided it.
How to Assess It
- Show a frog book page, a short frog video, and a zookeeper’s comment. Ask, “What did you learn from two of these sources?”

Ways to Teach It
Set up weather stations with a picture book, forecast video, printed chart, and recorded interview, then have students collect one fact from each.
Ask, “Which source taught you the most about animal homes, and what did you learn?” Record each child’s response.
Play Source Sort by having students place picture cards under book, screen, or person labels and explain each choice.
Plan care for a class plant by reading its tag, viewing a care page, and asking the custodian about watering.
