What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find information about one topic in books, digital materials, and conversations with people. They discuss how details from those sources connect to the topic and to each other.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students gather useful details from a printed text, a digital source, and a conversation. They name the source and explain how details from different sources connect to one topic or question.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every source as unrelated or copy facts without explaining how they fit the topic. They may also think personal communication means sharing an opinion rather than gathering information from someone.

How to Assess It

Give students a short book passage, a webpage screenshot, and a quote from a school nurse about sleep. Ask them to choose two facts and explain how both answer, “Why do children need sleep?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations with a book, webpage printout, and interview notes, then have students place matching fact cards under one topic heading.

  2. Ask, “How did the book and the speaker teach us different things about pets?” and record student connections on a chart.

  3. Play Source Match by having pairs match topic cards with related facts from books, websites, and classroom interviews.

  4. Invite the school nurse to answer student questions about healthy habits, then compare the answers with facts from a health book.
