What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a research question into useful keywords and search across print and digital sources. They choose information that directly supports the topic and comes from trustworthy authors or publishers.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students locate useful information in books, reliable websites, and academic databases. They refine keywords when results are weak. They can explain why each selected source is credible and relevant to the research question.

Common Misconceptions

Students often assume the first search result is the best source. They may confuse relevance with credibility or treat every database result as reliable. Some type the full question once and stop searching.

How to Assess It

Give students a research question and 10 minutes to find one database source and one other source. For each, they list one relevant detail and one sign of credibility.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up source stations with books, database records, news articles, and blogs; students select two useful sources and justify each choice.

  2. Ask students to write: Which source best answers our research question, and what makes its evidence more trustworthy than the others?

  3. Play Source Search Bingo using prompts such as peer reviewed article, recent statistic, named author, and opposing viewpoint.

  4. Have students investigate a local school issue, using the library catalog, a news archive, and one academic database.
