What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students develop a focused question, find useful evidence in books, websites, and interviews, and decide which sources are trustworthy. They sort notes by idea and combine information from more than one source in their own words.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can choose sources that fit the question and explain why each source is credible. The student records source details, paraphrases accurately, and builds a clear answer using evidence from several sources.

Common Misconceptions

Students may trust the first search result, assume a polished website is reliable, or reject print sources as outdated. They may copy sentences, collect unrelated facts, or treat an interview opinion as proven fact.

How to Assess It

Give students three brief source cards about one topic. Ask them to select two credible sources, explain each choice, and write a two-sentence answer combining one fact from each.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out print articles, website screenshots, and interview notes; pairs label author, date, evidence, purpose, and signs of credibility.

  2. Use the prompt, "Which source would you trust for a report on school lunches, and what details support your choice?"

  3. Run a credibility relay where teams rank source cards, then earn points by defending each ranking with a named source feature.

  4. Have students research a proposed school change using the handbook, a news item, and a staff interview, then write one recommendation.
