What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students answer a focused question by finding useful information in books, websites, databases, and interviews. They check who created each source and whether its claims are supported. They organize notes and combine evidence while giving credit.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose reliable sources and explain why each one is useful. Their notes separate quotations, paraphrases, and their own ideas. They combine evidence from several sources and give clear credit.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may trust the first search result or assume every .org site is reliable. They may copy sentences without quotation marks or citations. They may summarize each source separately instead of connecting ideas across sources.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short source cards. Ask them to use facts from two in one paragraph, label each source, and explain why they rejected the third.

Ways to Teach It
Set up source stations with a book excerpt, news article, website, and interview transcript, then have teams sort evidence into research folders.
Ask students to write: Which source would you trust most on this topic, and what specific details support your choice?
Play Credibility Challenge by awarding points for identifying an author, publication date, evidence, purpose, and possible bias on sample webpages.
Have students investigate a school issue using a news article, official webpage, and staff interview, then write a one-page recommendation.
