What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students find useful evidence about a text or related issue in books, reliable websites, databases, and interviews. They judge trustworthiness, keep relevant material, and combine ideas from several sources into their own explanation.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a research question, students select several relevant sources and explain why each is trustworthy. They take accurate notes and combine evidence from multiple sources into a clear explanation.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat the first search result or a polished website as trustworthy. They may collect unrelated facts, copy sentences, rely on one source, or list evidence without connecting ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students a book excerpt, website excerpt, and interview excerpt on one topic. Ask them to select two relevant details, explain each source’s credibility, and write a two-sentence synthesis.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Rotate through stations with a print article, website screenshot, and interview transcript, marking credibility clues and relevant evidence on sticky notes.

  2. Write a paragraph answering, “Which source best explains the author’s message, and why?” using evidence from two sources.

  3. Play Source Draft: teams choose source cards for a research question, then earn points for relevance, authority, currency, and variety.

  4. Investigate a claim from a local news article using a public record and a short interview, then present a sourced conclusion.
