What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a focused topic and develop questions to guide their research. They find useful information in books, trustworthy websites, and interviews, organize notes, and combine ideas from several sources.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why a source is trustworthy and record facts in their own words with the source named. The final explanation answers clear research questions and connects information from at least two source types.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the first search result is trustworthy or that every website is equally reliable. They may copy sentences instead of taking notes in their own words. They may list facts from separate sources without connecting them.

How to Assess It

Give students a book excerpt, web page, and interview note. Ask them to select two reliable sources, record one fact from each, and combine the facts into two sentences.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place book excerpts, web pages, and interview cards at stations; students sort them by usefulness and trustworthiness, then defend one choice.

  2. Have students write: Which two sources best answer your research question, and what does each add that the other does not?

  3. Play Source Detective: teams earn points by spotting missing authors, old dates, unsupported claims, and copied wording on sample source cards.

  4. Students interview a school employee about a chosen school issue, then compare the answers with a print or digital source.
