What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a focused topic and turn it into a research question. They find useful information in books, websites, and conversations with knowledgeable people. They check reliability, take notes, and group facts under clear headings.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student forms a focused question, uses several trustworthy sources, and explains why each source is reliable. The student records relevant facts in their own words and groups notes by subtopic.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat the first search result as trustworthy or list a search engine as the source. They may copy whole passages, collect unrelated facts, or organize notes only by source. They may also assume any adult interview counts as expert information.

How to Assess It

Give students three source cards about a topic. Ask them to choose two trustworthy sources, record one useful fact from each, and sort the facts under clear headings.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups a book, printed webpage, and interview notes, then have them sort fact cards into labeled subtopic folders.

  2. Ask students to write which source they would trust for an animal report and explain their choice with two details.

  3. Play Source Detective by showing source cards and having teams earn points for spotting authors, dates, evidence, and relevant facts.

  4. Students interview a school staff member, check the information in a book or website, and create a one-page guide for classmates.
