What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose a focused topic and form a research question. They gather information from books, websites, and personal communication such as interviews. They check credibility, organize notes, and combine information across sources.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students locate useful information in print, online, and through an interview or email. They take organized notes in their own words. Their final response combines related ideas from several credible sources and identifies where information came from.

Common Misconceptions

Students may trust the first search result or assume every published source is reliable. They may copy sentences instead of paraphrasing. They may list facts from separate sources without connecting the ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students three short sources about one topic. Ask them to choose two credible sources, explain each choice, and write three sentences combining information from both.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out a book excerpt, webpage, and interview transcript, then have students sort facts into labeled research question folders.

  2. Write a response to this prompt: Which source is most trustworthy, and what specific evidence supports your choice?

  3. Play Source Detective by awarding points when teams identify an author, publication date, supporting evidence, and possible bias.

  4. Investigate a school issue by reading a policy, checking the school website, and interviewing a staff member.
