What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a research question into focused keywords and search catalogs, databases, books, and reliable websites. They skim results, use filters, and choose information that directly addresses their research focus.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students search independently using keywords, subject terms, filters, and links within sources. They choose credible materials from different formats and explain how each one supports the research focus.

Common Misconceptions

Students may trust the first search result or assume every database article fits their question. They often use broad search terms, confuse relevance with credibility, or ignore publication dates and authorship.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Find one useful source for a given research question. Submit the citation, search terms used, and two sentences explaining its relevance and credibility.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups source cards from books, news sites, blogs, and databases, then have them sort by credibility and relevance.

  2. Ask students to explain which source they would trust for a school policy argument and name the evidence behind their choice.

  3. Run a keyword challenge where teams revise a weak search phrase and compare which version produces the most focused database results.

  4. Have students research a local issue, such as school traffic, using one news source, one government source, and one database article.
