What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students turn a research question into useful search terms. They search library databases, books, and trusted websites, then choose information that is credible and directly relevant.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can create focused keywords and use database filters to narrow results. They select credible sources that directly address the research question and explain why each source belongs.

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat the first search result as the best source. They may confuse relevance with credibility or assume every database article is scholarly. Broad search terms and ignored filters often produce weak results.

How to Assess It

For an exit ticket, give students one research question and database access. They submit one citation, their search terms, and two reasons the source fits.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs source cards and a research question; have them sort by credibility and relevance, then defend their strongest choice.

  2. Write a five-sentence rationale explaining why one database article fits the research question better than a popular website.

  3. Run a keyword challenge where teams earn points for finding the most relevant scholarly result using search terms and database filters.

  4. Compare a social media claim, news article, and journal study, then choose evidence for a public health advisory.
