What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students work with classmates to learn about one shared topic using teacher-provided books, websites, videos, pictures, or interviews. They select useful facts and sort them into a chart, web, or picture organizer.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can share a relevant fact from a book, video, picture, or interview. The student can place that fact in the correct part of a class chart and name the source.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy a whole sentence instead of choosing one useful fact. They may mix facts under the wrong heading or treat a guess as information from a source.

How to Assess It

Give each student a picture book page about frogs. Ask them to state one fact and place a sticky note under “Food,” “Home,” or “Body.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Provide books, printed photos, and toy animals, then have students find habitat facts and add picture cards to a class organizer.

  2. After viewing two sources about bees, ask, “What fact appeared in both, and where did you learn it?”

  3. Play Fact Sort by having teams place source cards and fact cards under labeled headings such as food, home, and body.

  4. Interview the school gardener about plant needs, then record answers with drawings and labels on a shared chart.
