What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a topic they are curious about and form a question that can guide them in finding information. With prompts or picture choices, they narrow a broad wondering into one focused question.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a photo, object, or read-aloud topic, a student can state or dictate a related question. The question asks for information and stays focused on the chosen topic.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students give a fact or opinion instead of asking a question. Others ask something too broad, such as “Tell me everything about bears,” or move away from the chosen topic. They may think they must write the question independently instead of saying or dictating it.
How to Assess It
- Show a photo of a bird’s nest and ask, “What is one question we could answer by reading a book about this nest?” Record the student’s exact words.

Ways to Teach It
Place a pinecone, shell, and feather on a table, then have students choose one and dictate a question about it.
After a weather read-aloud, ask, “What do you still wonder about weather?” and record each student’s question on chart paper.
Play Question or Statement by reading sentence cards aloud and having students hold up a question mark or period card.
Invite the custodian to show one tool, then help students prepare questions about what it does and why it is used.
