What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students begin with a focused question and find useful facts in at least two age-appropriate sources. They record and sort notes, then use the information to give an answer.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students locate useful details in a book, article, video, or website. They write brief notes, sort them under clear headings, and use the notes to answer the question.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy full sentences, collect unrelated fun facts, or rely on only one source. They may repeat the same fact instead of combining information from different sources.
How to Assess It
- Provide two short sources about butterflies. Ask students to record facts in a source chart, then answer, “How does a caterpillar become a butterfly?”

Ways to Teach It
Set out two books, a fact sheet, and sticky notes; partners answer “How do frogs grow?” and sort notes by life stage.
Ask, “Which source best answered our question, and why?” Students cite one detail in a two-sentence response.
Play Relevant or Not: read fact cards about penguins, then students place each under Answers Our Question or Interesting but Unrelated.
Research what a class pet needs using a care book and shelter webpage, then make a labeled supply checklist.
