What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make a clear message using the form selected by the teacher. They combine words, pictures, sounds, or digital tools so an audience can understand the message.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a complete message in the assigned form, such as a page, poster, recording, or digital slide. Their words, pictures, and sounds work together for the intended reader or listener.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw without adding enough words or details to make the message clear. They may also treat a recording, picture, or digital slide exactly like a printed page.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to make a paper sign that tells classmates how to care for a classroom book. Check for a clear message, matching picture, and readable words.

Ways to Teach It
Give students paper, crayons, and labels to create a picture guide showing how to wash hands.
Ask students to write one sentence explaining which works better for a birthday greeting, a card or an audio message, and why.
Play Mode Match by having students match message cards, such as directions or stories, to posters, recordings, books, or slides.
Have students create a digital slide inviting families to a class reading day, using one picture and one clear sentence.
