What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine assigned forms, such as words, images, layout, or audio, to communicate one clear message. They select features that fit who will receive the message and why it is being made.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a clear message using the assigned modes, such as writing, images, or audio. Their word choice and design fit the intended purpose and audience.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add images, audio, or color only for decoration. They may also choose words and design features they like without considering the audience or purpose.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to create a one-slide announcement for younger students using a headline, image, and caption. Have them name the purpose and explain one choice made for the audience.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs paper, markers, and printed icons to make a safety poster for first graders using words and images.
Show two versions of the same message and ask students which better fits families, then have them explain why.
Play Audience Switch by giving groups one message and audience cards, then having them revise the title, image, and wording.
Have students create a digital flyer announcing a school event, using a headline, photo, details, and layout for caregivers.
