What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students combine words with images, layout, sound, or movement in a teacher-selected format. They shape those choices for a clear goal and a named audience.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students create a clear poster, slide, comic, or recording for an assigned audience. Their words, images, layout, and other features work together to achieve the intended purpose.

Common Misconceptions

Students may add pictures that decorate rather than explain the message. They may also ignore the audience, use too much text, or mix colors, sounds, and fonts without a clear purpose.

How to Assess It

Ask students to create a one-page water-saving flyer for second graders with a headline, three facts, a labeled image, and a call to action.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs paper, markers, and printed pictures to create a playground safety poster for younger students.

  2. Ask students to explain which words, images, colors, or sounds would fit a school announcement for families and why.

  3. Play Audience Match by having teams pair sample headlines, images, and layouts with audience and purpose cards.

  4. Have students design a digital or paper menu that helps cafeteria visitors quickly choose a balanced lunch. What elements should they add?
