What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine words with images, layout, sound, or movement in a teacher-selected format. They shape those choices for a clear goal and a named audience.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students create a clear poster, slide, comic, or recording for an assigned audience. Their words, images, layout, and other features work together to achieve the intended purpose.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add pictures that decorate rather than explain the message. They may also ignore the audience, use too much text, or mix colors, sounds, and fonts without a clear purpose.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to create a one-page water-saving flyer for second graders with a headline, three facts, a labeled image, and a call to action.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs paper, markers, and printed pictures to create a playground safety poster for younger students.
Ask students to explain which words, images, colors, or sounds would fit a school announcement for families and why.
Play Audience Match by having teams pair sample headlines, images, and layouts with audience and purpose cards.
Have students design a digital or paper menu that helps cafeteria visitors quickly choose a balanced lunch. What elements should they add?
