What Students Need to Do: Students find features such as headings, bold words, page numbers, and illustrations in a text. They explain how each feature helps, then use helpful features in their own writing.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can point to a feature and explain what it helps the reader understand. They can add a clear heading, useful illustration, bold word, or page number to their own text.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat pictures as decoration instead of sources of information. They may confuse headings with titles, bold every word, or number items instead of pages.
How to Assess It: Give students a short page titled “Frogs.” Ask them to add a heading, bold one key word, and draw an illustration that explains an idea.

Lesson moves

Have students make a three-page animal booklet with headings, page numbers, bold words, and illustrations that match the facts.
Ask, “Which feature helped you understand this page most, and what did it teach you?”
