What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students group related sentences around one main idea and arrange them in an order readers can follow. They use transitions that show how each idea connects to the next.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes paragraphs with a clear focus and related supporting details. Ideas appear in a sensible order, and transitions clearly show sequence, cause, contrast, or addition.

Common Misconceptions

Students may group sentences by topic but place them in an order that is hard to follow. They may overuse transitions such as “first” and “next,” or add transitions that do not match the relationship between ideas.

How to Assess It

Give students five scrambled sentences and three transition words. Ask them to arrange the sentences into one clear paragraph and explain one placement choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips from a scrambled paragraph, then have them arrange the ideas and insert transition cards where needed.

  2. Ask students to explain whether a paragraph should use time order, cause and effect, or order of importance, then justify their choice.

  3. Play Transition Match by having teams pair sentence sets with cards labeled however, therefore, for example, meanwhile, and in addition.

  4. Have students write clear directions for a school routine, organizing each step logically and adding transitions that help a new student follow it.
