What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine related sentences into one focused paragraph. They choose a logical order and connect ideas so the paragraph is easy to follow.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write a paragraph with one clear main idea and related supporting sentences. They order ideas logically and use transitions or repeated key words to connect sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may put each sentence on a new topic or arrange details in a confusing order. They may also repeat the same idea, leave out transitions, or write a group of sentences without a clear focus.
How to Assess It
- Give students five mixed-up sentences about a school garden. Ask them to order the sentences into one paragraph and explain how two sentences connect.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips about a class pet, then have them remove unrelated details and arrange the rest into a clear paragraph.
Ask students to explain in writing how each sentence in a sample paragraph connects to its main idea.
Play Paragraph Sort, where partners race to group mixed sentence cards by topic and place each group in logical order.
Use notes from a weather report to write one clear paragraph for the school morning announcements.
