What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect sentences and parts of sentences so readers can follow the relationship between ideas. They choose words that signal addition, comparison, contrast, cause, or sequence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select connectors that accurately signal how two ideas relate. They place them clearly in sentences and can explain why each choice fits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a connector because it sounds formal, even when its meaning does not fit. They may also place connectors between unrelated ideas or forget needed commas.
How to Assess It
- Give students four linked sentences with the connectors removed. Ask them to add fitting connectors and label each relationship, such as contrast, addition, or cause.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and connector cards, then have them build and read logical paragraph sequences.
Ask students to compare recess and physical education using one addition connector and one contrast connector.
Play connector swap, where students replace a highlighted connector without changing the relationship between ideas.
Have students revise directions for a school routine by adding connectors that clarify order, cause, and contrast.
