What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect related ideas with conjunctions and transition words or phrases. They choose connectors that clearly show relationships such as cause, contrast, time, or sequence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can choose words that accurately show cause, contrast, time, or sequence. They can revise a choppy paragraph so its ideas connect and flow clearly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a connector that shows the wrong relationship, such as using although for a cause. They may overuse and or place transitions between unrelated ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students these pairs: “The field was wet. The game continued.” and “Rain began. We went inside.” Ask them to combine each pair using although or since.

Ask students to explain how a sentence changes when because is replaced with although, then write an example of each.
Play Transition Match by having teams pair sentence cards with the conjunction or transition that best shows the relationship.
Write a short school announcement explaining a schedule change with since and acknowledging a challenge with although.
