What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students connect ideas so readers can tell how the information is related. They select conjunctions and transitions that signal similarity, difference, cause, or sequence.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose conjunctions and transitions that clearly match the relationship between ideas. They can connect similar and different details without changing the intended meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a transition that sounds smooth but shows the wrong relationship. They may use the same transition repeatedly or place it where the connection is unclear. Some confuse comparison words with contrast words.

How to Assess It

Give students two facts about frogs and toads. Ask them to combine the facts using one comparison transition and one contrast transition.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with related facts, then have them join each pair using a conjunction or transition card.

  2. Ask students to explain how two characters are alike and different, using similarly and in contrast in their response.

  3. Play “Transition Match” by having students match idea pairs with cards labeled comparison, contrast, cause, or sequence.

  4. Compare two lunch menus or weather forecasts, then write sentences that show similarities and differences using fitting transitions.
