What Students Need to Do

Students arrange ideas in an order that readers can follow. They group related details, use transitions, and include an opening and closing that fit the purpose.

What Mastery Looks Like

The student creates a clear beginning, organized middle, and fitting ending. Related details stay together, and transitions help the reader follow the ideas.

Common Misconceptions

Students may list ideas in the order they think of them instead of grouping related details. They may use transitions randomly or write an ending that adds a new topic.

How to Assess It

Give students six scrambled sentences about a class field trip. Ask them to order the sentences, add two transitions, and explain one choice.

   Give pairs sentence strips from a short paragraph and have them arrange the strips into a clear beginning, middle, and ending.

   Ask students to explain which detail should come first in a paragraph about a school event and why.

   Play Transition Match by having teams connect sentence cards with fitting words such as first, next, because, and finally.
