What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose an organizational pattern that fits their purpose and audience. They arrange related ideas into a clear opening, body, and ending, using paragraphs and transitions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- The student writes a focused opening, groups related details, and orders ideas logically. Paragraphs and transitions guide the reader to a closing that fits the piece.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every piece should follow time order. They may add transition words without making ideas connect, repeat the opening as the conclusion, or include unrelated details.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write six sentences explaining how to prepare for a rainy day. Include an opening, logical sequence, two useful transitions, and a closing.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence cards from a mixed-up article, then have them arrange the cards and label the opening, body, and closing.
Ask students to explain whether time order, cause and effect, or problem and solution best fits a topic they choose.
Play Structure Sort by having pairs match short passages to sequence, description, compare and contrast, cause and effect, or problem and solution.
Have students create clear instructions for a classroom job, then ask a partner to follow them exactly and mark confusing steps.
